Best of 2018

This gallery contains what I consider to be the countdown of my best images from 2018:

A pair of Flamingos in early morning light. I was lucky to see some of these beautiful birds under perfect lighting conditions during my stay in Portugal.

- 9 -

Castelo de Óbidos. I have learned over the past few years that when the weather is less than desirable and there is no good light for photography there is still a chance to get a usable image at the onset of dusk, like in this example.

- 8 -

The Ponte 25 de Abril at sunset. I found this great viewpoint unfortunately only seconds before I took the image, which had me miss the even better sunset that had just occurred.

- 7 -

This young Alpine ibex I encountered in the Austrian Alps was part of a small group of adolescents that were just enjoying some autumn sun.

- 6 -

Extremely picturesque Bled in Slovenia is a place right out of a fairy tale.

- 5 -

Houses at the waterfront in Porto. This unexpected long exposure was taken by resting the camera on a pole.

- 4 -

The Capela do Senhor da Pedra is a beautiful landmark at the Praia da Sãozinha in northern Portugal.

- 3 -

The sea stack at Cabo da Roca was the image that saved the day after encountering hideous weather conditions at this iconic spot. In this case the foggy background complements the dramatic shape of the rock nicely.

- 2 -

Upper Inn Valley in Tirol, Austria. I am very happy about this one, not only because I think it's a good panoramic image (which I rarely manage to create), it is also a good image of my home (which I rarely manage to create).

Talk about fairy tales - the Palácio Nacional da Pena in Sintra, above the clouds in the very early morning light takes the top spot of 2018. Since visitors can't enter the palace grounds before 09:30 when all the interesting light is long gone, some bending of the rules was required to get this image.
